Captain Cornelis Jacobson May  came from Hoorn in Holland.   He was the Captain of the Fortune in 1614 and sailed along the coast of what is now New Jersey. Cape May is named for this.

In 1625 he was Captain of the New Netherland (Nieu Nederlandt) that landed the first settler families from Europe in New Netherland, and became the first Director.
