The documents refer to Emmanuel as a 'free negro'.   It is not clear if he was formerly a slave or not, and if he was subject to the annual tax to remain free.  More research needed.

He was married to Dorothy d'Angola (formerly Dorothy Creole), and adopted a child with her, Antonio d'Angola.
