Document: Answer of director D'Hinoyossa to the vice-director's protest

Extract from the minutes kept by the director and council of the colony of New Amstel.

In reply to the citation and the accompanying protest dated 27 July, which Mr. Beeckman served on the director and council of this colony, it is noted that the director and council are exercising their judicial authority; and furthermore, that it depends on what the director and council send over for our superiors to settle.

However, we would like to add that you, protestor, have not yet demonstrated your authority to instruct or advise us, but that we adhere to the recommendation of the general and council of New Netherland to administer justice without delay, as should have been done already according to their advice.

This matter has neither become a major question nor has this matter been concluded on the appointed day because of the indisposition of Mr. LaGrange; however, without delay, it shall be considered as the principal question next Tuesday, the 2nd of August.
