Before me, Cornelis van Ruyven, appointed secretary in New Netherland for the General Chartered West India Company, appeared the worthy Tomas Hal, residing near the city of New Amsterdam, who in the presence of the hereinafter named witnesses declared that under renunciation of the beneficium ordinis, excussionis et divisionis, of the meaning of which he regards himself as fully informed, he constitutes himself surety and principal for Mr. Tomas Spicer for the satisfaction of the judgment which may be pronounced by the honorable director general and supreme council, or a committee thereof, in so far as the amount is concerned in which the said Spicer may be condemned in the action instituted against him by Arent van Curler before the director general and council, promising to satisfy the said judgment and decision. For which he hereby binds his person and property, real and personal, submitting the same to the control of all courts, tribunals and judges Done at New Amsterdam, this day the 15th of October A° 1654, in New Netherland.
