[ Before me ], Cornelis van [ Tienhoven ], appointed secretary in New Netherland [ for ] the Chartered West India Company, [ appeared ][ Herman Remsch ]art, aged 49 years, and Albert Cornelissen, aged 26 years, who at the request of Jacob Bouwensen jointly testify, attest and declare, in place and with promise of a solemn oath if necessary, that it is true that at the house of said Remshart some words passed between said Jacob Bouwensen and Johannes Winckelman, among others these: Said Winckelman said to Jacob Bouwensen, “I give you the sack; you do not suit me,” whereupon Jacob answered, “I give you the sack also.” All of which the deponents offer if necessary and required to confirm on oath, as every one is bound to testify to the truth, especially when requested so to do, the deponents declaring that they have done this to no one’s benefit or injury, without fear or favor, or personal hatred of anyone. Done this 8th of March anno 1642, in Fort Amsterdam in New Netherland.[1]

[1]: This declaration was made in connection with a complaint brought by Johannes Winckelman against Abraham Pietersen for tampering with Jacob Bouwensen, his man servant, whom he had brought from Holland to superintend farm No. 5. See court proceedings of March 13, 1642, in N.Y. Col. MSS., 4:115.
