Holding Institution Metropolitan Museum of Art Document ID MET-27.199.167 Description Tiles 1640-1660 Document Date 1640 Translation Translation Tiles from Delft in the Netherlands came to New Netherland via shipments. They were both decorative and very practical. The weight of the boxes of tiles was useful in the hold of the ship as ballast. The tiles were used to surround hearths where soot could be easily wiped off the smooth surface. For residents of New Netherland they would have served as reminders of the 'home country'.
