The honorable director general and council of New Netherland have summoned hereto the court messenger, Claes van Elslant, greetings.

Whereas the honorable Pieter Tonneman, schout of this city, has remonstrated to us by petition that he found himself greatly aggrieved by the judgment handed down by the honorable court of this city dated 26 June, last past, between him and Andries Rees and Andries Jochemsz for reasons detailed in the attached copy of the petition. For this our assistance is requested.[1]

Therefore, we order you to summon the aforesaid Andries Rees and Andries Jochemsz to appear, or to send a deputy, before us here in Fort Amsterdam on Thursday being the 12th of this month in order to respond to such demands and rejoinders which the aforesaid schout, Pieter Tonneman, shall make or effect on that day, inviting also those of the aforesaid court (if it pleases them) to appear, or to send deputies on the appointed day in order to see us annul or confirm the aforesaid judgment.

Providing copies on behalf of the parties and relating to us what you encounter.

Issued in Fort Amsterdam in New Netherland the 9th of July 1663.

[1]: Tonneman cited Rees for allowing people to game and drink on Sunday at his house, contrary to the ordinance. Reess defense, that he tapped two hours after the afternoon sermon, was allowed and he was not fined. The councils decision regarding the judgment is not known. See RNA, 4:264 for this case.
