Pirates were part of the culture of New Netherland. Every ship leaving New Amsterdam had the potential to meet pirates in the open water, and many pirates landed at New Amsterdam to trade. Unlike Privateers, who had been given authority by the English, Dutch, or other government, pirates were simply raiding the shipping trades for their own benefit.
