Description: In New Amsterdam, taverns were as common as in Amsterdam and played an equally if not more important role in the daily life of this burgeoning community. Here one came together with friends and visitors, often from mixed social backgrounds, to enjoy a beer, smoke a pipe, do trade and discuss events, and also play games, such as back-gammon, shown in this painting.
