Before me, Jacob Hendricksz Kip, appointed by the honorable director general and council of New Netherland, in the absence of the secretary, appeared the worthy Jan Harmensz, a trader here on the island of Manhatans, who in the presence of the undersigned witnesses declared that he appointed and empowered, as he does hereby, the worthy Pieter Antony, an inhabitant and trader here, to ask, demand and receive in his, the principal's, name from the magistrates of New Haven, or those who may have in their custody the wines carried thither by Davidt Provoost to be distilled for the principal, three pipes and one partly filled cask of brandy (or such vessels and quantity as might be found there); or to hear and answer such claim as may be set up thereto there, and further to do and to act as he, the principal, were he present, could or might do and to prosecute the case to the end, as well in as out of court The wines being received, he shall ship and convey them hither at the first opportunity in such craft as he, the attorney, shall think proper. He, Jan Harmensz, promises to hold and cause to be held valid whatever Pieter Antony shall do and perform in the matter aforesaid. Thus done and signed by the principal with the witnesses thereto invited, this 16th of November 1649, New Amsterdam.
