Document: Letter from William Beeckman to director Stuyvesant

Noble, Honorable, most Esteemed and very Valiant Lord:

My Lord, through haste I forgot to respond in my letter to your statement that the colonel was not granted an audience until the fifth day, or Wednesday. I do not remember writing this, because it was certainly on Monday. Furthermore, I regret that Mr. Alrichs did not send a copy of the letter which the governor of Maryland sent to him. I urged him to do it several times, as Lieutenant Hynojosse and van Sweringen have declared to Mr. van Ruyven, because they agreed with me that it was necessary. Therefore, it seemed very strange to me that it was not done. It was, indeed, a great mistake to keep such a defamatory letter from you. In conclusion, I commend you to God's protection, and wish for increased strength, enduring health and a prosperous administration. Remaining,
