Description

This kind of beer jug was used in the households of New Netherland. The cap was helpful to keep the beer fresh.   Blue and gray-white pottery like this was common in many early 17th-century homes.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Summary: German stoneware tankards were brought to America in large numbers on Dutch fur-trading ships. Shards of these popular vessels have been uncovered at seventeenth century sites in New York and New England.
