Object: Guilder - Carolus guilder - Florin

Description

Currency in New Netherland was a complex and shifting subject, and the documents show a variety of currencies to mark trade.    Wampum or sewant, beaver pelts, ells of duffel, and guilders are all commonly mentioned.

A Carolus guilder was the equivalent of 1.5 guilders, as was the daalder/daelder.    The stiver was 1/20th of a guilder; the schelling was 6 stivers.

Guilders were also called florins, and you can sometimes see the symbol f.  referring to the mint in Florence that once produced hard currency for the Habsburg Empire.

The pound Flemish was equivalent to 6 guilders.
