Painting - The Departure of the Pilgrim Fathers from Delfshaven on their Way to America, 1620, Adam Willaerts, Wikimedia Commons, public domain.
Holding institution of original work: Museum of Fine Arts Boston
The Puritans, or Pilgrims as they are sometimes described, departed for the New World in 1620, originally planning to land in New Amsterdam, they were blown off course to the north and landed somewhere near Plymouth Rock. The generosity of the Native Americans to these settlers is commemorated annually in a Thanksgiving feast in the United States.
