Title: Ships before Hoorn, Netherlands
Artist: Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom
Date: 1622
Description: This impressive panoramic view of Hoorn with its many towers and turrets welcomed passengers of the many ships arriving in Holland after long journeys across the ocean. The artist gives special attention to the large vessels in the foreground, which can be identified as a “Pinas,” a sailing vessel that could function as cargo ship or war ship when necessary. Hoorn was a significant shipping center due to its ideal, protected harbor location within the waters of the Zuiderzee (today the Ijsselmeer) and its strong ties with the Dutch East and West India Companies.
