Havana was a major trading port founded by the Spanish on the island of Cuba. Dutch relations with the Spanish were complicated, as the countries were sometimes at war. Despite this, we have records of Dutch ships landing at Havana. Treaties and truces had to be communicated back from Europe to islands like Cuba, and it is possible that the lag time involved allowed for a certain amount of trade there.
Throughout the 17th century the Spanish fleet often gathered at Havana to make the trip over the Atlantic in groups. The famous 'silver fleet' was pursued by ships from other European nations in the hopes of taking a prize containing a hold full of silver.
